We've just wrapped up our 6th week and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed I've made it six whole weeks! That's 1/4 the way through the cycle! I'm so good at fizzling out after about, oh, the first week. It's really helped me to have two other families who are really enjoying our time together and encouraging me along, as well as helping to facilitate our group days! What a blessing! Here are some of the projects we've worked on in Geography, Science, Presentations, Art History, and more! (If you want to see the complete curriculum plan for that week, just click on the Week #s below.) Week 1This week we dissected a store-bought chicken as we studied body tissues, painted some element of Algonquin daily life as our American Artist was known for, shared what we did over the summer, learned the basics of reading sheet music, learned about Hippocrates, played Sudoku, and learned how to write an acrostic poem! "Taste of the States" From Maine: Lobster Rolls with dill pickles and potato chips From New Hampshire: Pumpkin Pie From Massachusetts: Cranberry Sauce, whole and jellied From Rhode Island: Johnny Cakes with butter and honey, and tea with milk From Connecticut: Clam Chowder Week 2Highlights from Week 2: Using logic and reasoning to solve problems, reciting our acrostic poems, playing American Folk songs with percussion instruments, tasting regional foods like salt water taffy, bagles, and crab dip, playing classical music from the Renaissance, and learning how to turn a fable into a poem. Week 3Highlights from this week: Leonardo da Vinci, making a moving hand model, presenting a "book commercial", painting an Algonquin village, and swimming! Week 4This week we recited the longest memorized Scripture passage we know, tasted fried chicken and waffles, key lime pie, Louisianna gumbo, Mississippi mud pie, and white bbq sauce, and began learning about the Baroque period and Johann Sebastian Bach. Week 5We spent time walking around the neighborhood observing everything we could using all five of our senses, we learned how to write in Morse Code, we learned about Braille, shared our extra research on a topic we found interesting during the week, and read a poem about John 6:51, "I Am the Bread of Life" by Edward Taylor. Week 6We shared our art from our John White study. We created a percussion orchestra with each child clapping on a different note. This meant that some kids played the whole note, one played the half, some the quarter, one the eighth, and one played the dotted-quarter and quarter. It was tricky but they did a great job! We read a lovely book called "John J. Plenty and Fiddler Dan" and enjoyed time doing art outside. Today's art was to paint a winter activity.

This week, kids... we're going to try something new in school! As the primary educator for my children, I am always looking for better ways to do things, or at least looking for anything that will fit our needs and work for our family! Often times, I can't find what I need, so I create it! Here are some of my started, finished, and tossed ideas, as well as things I use and love that other creative people have thought of!
