History: George Washington, U.S. Constitution
Geography: Locate these places on a globe or map.
New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts Weeks 1-10 we will cover the 50 US states and capitals. The remaining weeks we will look at physical features. Week 5: Lansing, Michigan (MI) Columbus, Ohio (OH) Indianapolis, Indiana (IN) Frankfort, Kentucky (KY) Nashville, Tennessee (TN) Trace a basic map of the US onto tracing paper, including these 5 states and the locations of their capitals. Older students can trace the same onto laminating sheets with fine-tip permanent markers to make a keepsake layered map book of the US states, capitals, and physical features.

Michigan: Cherries / how cherries came to America, how Marischino cherries are made, Europe Ohio: Cincinnati chili (served over spaghetti) / Cincinnati, sweet vs savory spices Indiana: Sugar Cream Pie aka Hoosier Pie or "Desperation Pie" / Quakers, what's a "Hoosier"? Science: Five Senses
Go for a nature walk. Use your 5 senses to observe your surroundings. Discuss how people without each sense might observe their surroundings. Assign a "missing sense" to each child for 10 minutes. Discuss what they experienced. Make a coded letter or learn how to write your name using Braille and/or Morse Code.

Classical Arts (3-week study): The Baroque Period
Music: Johannes Sebastian Bach, Germany, Lutheran Church Listen to "Concerto for Two Violins" Read about it here. Discuss its history and play the song during art and/or poetry time. Art: Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), water-color artist, President portraits.
Using water color paints, paint a portrait of one of your parents, teachers, pastors, or other instructors. Poetry: Edward Taylor (1642-1729), Puritans
Read "I Am The Bread of Life: Meditation Eight: John 6:51" Write a poem about a verse or passage you love. |
English Grammar:
Practice conjugating common verbs into four different tenses. We printed my practice page out and put it in a page protector so we can use it again and again, just erasing when done to save on ink and paper.

Presentations (Public Speaking):
Research more on any of this next week's memory phrases and tell us what you learned and what interested you the most. Next week's presentation: Show some of your art from our artist study of John White and tell us something you learned while studying him. Presentation for Week 7: Do a simple cooking demonstration. Examples: how to make a PB&J, how to fry an egg, how to make tea, etc. Include a listing of supplies and ingredients and be ready to demonstrate. |
